Frequently asked questions

Can I enter more than one shift?

Yes. Click “Add shift” to enter as many shifts as you need. Each shift has its own clock-in, clock-out, and unpaid breaks. The calculator totals them together.

How are overnight shifts handled?

When clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the shift is treated as continuing past midnight. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours. You can turn this off if you want an error instead.

Are breaks paid or unpaid?

Breaks are unpaid by default and are subtracted from the gross shift time to give net work time. If a break is paid at your job, simply do not enter it.

What do the presets do?

The presets fill in a typical day for you (8-hour day, 30-minute unpaid lunch, or 1-hour unpaid lunch). They never apply automatically — you click a preset to use it.

Why decimal hours?

Payroll systems and invoices usually need decimal hours, not H:MM. 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours, not 8.30. See the Hours to Decimal converter.
